When someone you care about is struggling, it’s natural to want to help. The good news is that support doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, the simplest things make the biggest difference.
Listen without trying to fix. Let them talk. You don’t need to have answers. Phrases like “I’m here for you” or “That sounds really hard” go a long way.
Respect their pace. Recovery isn’t linear. Try not to push someone to “get better” on a timeline. Patience and consistency matter more than urgency.
Encourage professional support gently. Offering to help with a phone call or a ride to an appointment can remove barriers that feel overwhelming when someone is struggling.
Take care of yourself, too. Supporting someone through a tough time can be draining. It’s okay to set boundaries and take time for your own well-being.
