Newaygo County Mental Health (NCMH) provides comprehensive support for adults with mental health conditions, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. Our recovery-focused services include 24-hour crisis care, therapy, psychiatric services, case management, housing support, skill building, employment assistance, and specialized programs.

We partner with you to create a person-centered treatment plan that promotes wellness, independence, and community integration.

 

Crisis and Emergency Services

24-Hour Emergency Services

Immediate support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through our regular phone numbers. During non-business hours, an answering service connects you with an emergency services worker.

Services include:

  • Crisis assessment and intervention
  • Direct support by phone or in person
  • Inpatient screening and assessment
  • Referrals to appropriate care
  • Coordination with other healthcare organizations

Crisis Residential Services

Crisis residential services provide hospital-based medical and psychiatric supervised care for individuals experiencing psychiatric crises who may be at risk to themselves or others, are unable to meet basic needs, and require supervision in a secure therapeutic environment.

 

Assessment and Diagnostic Services

Diagnosis, Assessment, and Referral

All individuals receive a diagnostic assessment from a licensed mental health professional. We evaluate strengths, challenges, and needs and connect you with appropriate services within our agency, in the community, or both.

Psychiatric Evaluations

Comprehensive, face-to-face evaluations conducted by a psychiatrist for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Evaluations assess mental status, presenting concerns, psychiatric history, and medication history. Many evaluations are available via telehealth.

Psychological Assessment

Standardized testing and IQ assessments provided by a credentialed psychologist to develop a comprehensive understanding of individual needs.

Available for:

  • Guardianship proceedings requested by Probate Court
  • Specialized court contracts
  • Medical necessity as determined by an NCMH psychiatrist (Medicaid reimbursable)

Note: Private pay is required for other requests, as most insurance plans do not cover psychological testing.

Medication Assessment

Face-to-face evaluation and ongoing monitoring by a psychiatrist or physician to determine the effectiveness of medication treatment. Many medication assessments are available via telehealth.

Interdisciplinary Health Screening for Older Adults

Comprehensive screening for older adults assessing functioning in the following areas:

  • Medical health
  • Social connections
  • Cognitive functioning
  • Hearing and vision
  • Nutrition

Results help determine whether an individual can live independently and safely and what supports may be beneficial.

Nursing Home Screening

Evaluation for individuals entering nursing home facilities to identify mental health concerns and provide recommendations for appropriate treatment and placement.

 

Therapy and Treatment Services

Individual and Family Therapy

Short-term therapy, typically six to ten sessions, for individuals and families facing mental health challenges. Services are available to Newaygo County residents of all ages.

Group Therapy

Therapeutic groups that provide peer support, skill development, and shared learning experiences in a supportive environment.

Peer Support Services

Support provided by individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges. Peer Support Specialists offer understanding, validation, and assistance navigating recovery.

 

Support and Care Coordination

Case Management Services

Comprehensive support for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, and developmental disabilities.

Services include:

  • Holistic assessment of needs and strengths
  • Connection to community resources
  • Ongoing monitoring and assistance
  • Support for maintaining mental and physical health

Adult Foster Care Coordination

Assistance with foster care placement for individuals who require support with daily living activities beyond available resources.

Jail Diversion Services

Service coordination for individuals with mental health or developmental disabilities who have been accused of or committed misdemeanors or non-violent felonies, including individuals on probation or parole.

Nursing Home Consultation and Training

Consultation and training for nursing home staff, family members, and caregivers supporting residents with mental health-related challenges.

 

Psychiatric Care

Psychiatric Hospitalization Coordination

Screening, admission, discharge planning, and coordination services for adults requiring psychiatric hospitalization.

 

Substance Use Services

Integrated treatment for adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Services include:

  • Comprehensive assessments
  • Individual and group therapy
  • Care coordination
  • Referrals to specialized programs

 

Community Living and Employment Services

These Medicaid services are provided based on medical necessity and an individual’s person-centered plan.

Assistive Technology

Devices or equipment that support independence in daily living and interaction with the environment.

Community Living Supports

Services that support independence, community inclusion, and productivity in home or community settings.

Support includes:

  • Daily living assistance
  • Life skills and community integration
  • Health and safety support

Skill Building Assistance

Support to increase economic self-sufficiency and engagement in school, work, or volunteer activities.

Supported and Integrated Employment Services

Employment support to help individuals obtain and maintain paid work.

  • Job development and placement
  • Job coaching
  • Long-term follow-along support
  • Transportation assistance

Housing Assistance

Short-term or one-time financial assistance for individuals transitioning to more independent living.

Peer-Delivered or Operated Support Services

Programs that promote skill-sharing, self-advocacy, confidence, and active participation in recovery.

 

Specialized Waiver Programs

Habilitation Supports Waiver (HSW)

A Medicaid program for individuals with the most significant medical needs.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Enrollment in Medicaid
  • A qualifying developmental disability under Michigan law
  • Residence in a community setting
  • Risk of institutional placement without waiver services

Applications are processed through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and enrollment is subject to available openings.
